Rock band ‘The The‘ ends their L.P. hiatus by confirming the release of their first studio album, ‘Ensoulment‘, in nearly a quarter century since their last album, NakedSelf, from early 2000, along with supporting a World tour. The album is set to release on 6th September, 2024 on Cinéola / earMUSIC.
You can listen to the new single from the recently-announced L.P., ‘Cognitive Dissident”, here. The song vibes as a bluesy anthem for a “post-truth” age, co-written by Johnson and Cadogan. The cover artwork for this single is a previously unpublished work by Johnson’s late brother, Andy Dog.
Johnson’s comment on the inspiration for this single is as follows:
“We certainly live in interesting times. The world is becoming more inverted, weird and hallucinogenic by the day.”

Matt is joined by long-standing THE THE stalwarts James Eller (bass), DC Collard (keyboards), Earl Harvin (drums), and Barrie Cadogan (lead guitar). The album also marks the return of co-producer and engineer Warne Livesey. Additional performances include Gillian Glover (backing vocals), Terry Edwards (horns), Sonya Cullingford (fiddle) and Danny Cummings (percussion).
Johnson and his band will hit the road for a North American leg at the start of October, traversing cities such as Atlanta, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, and more. Between dates in October, the band will travel to Europe, and then in November, they’ll head down to New Zealand and Australia to play the remainder tour dates.
